Tsumami zaiku is a traditional Japanese craft in which small pieces of fabric are folded, pinched, and arranged to create delicate flowers and decorative ornaments.
In our original Japanese article, we photographed the process from preparing the fabric to completing a flower, so you can see how a simple piece of cloth gradually becomes a beautiful handmade decoration.

What is Tsumami Zaiku?
Tsumami zaiku is known for its small folded fabric petals and elegant floral designs. The finished pieces are often used for hair ornaments, kimono and yukata accessories, weddings, festivals, and decorative items.
Although the finished flowers look delicate, the basic idea is simple: prepare the fabric, shape each petal carefully, and combine the petals one by one.
From Fabric to Flower
For the flower shown in our article, pale pink fabric is cut into smaller pieces and shaped using a tsumami zaiku plate. The plate helps keep the petals consistent in shape.
Each petal is made separately. As more petals are prepared and arranged together, the flower slowly begins to take shape.
The Beauty of Handmade Work
One of the most interesting parts of tsumami zaiku is seeing how much careful work is hidden behind a small finished flower. The materials may be simple, but balance, folding, color choice, and patience all affect the final result.
Our Japanese article includes photographs of the actual making process, so even if you do not read Japanese, you can follow the visual steps and use your browser’s translation feature for the details.
